Fragaria virginiana is the native wild strawberry of America often referred to as the Scarlet Strawberry. It was one of the two parent in the famous cross of Scarlet with Chilean strawberries that resulted in the new species F. x ananassa. Scarlet strawberries are often used in plant breeding. The wild aroma is different than the aroma and flavor of the alpine strawberry. Scarlet strawberries are in demand in Europe. A breeder in Europe tells me that they are preferred to alpines for flavor. There are not many varieties of scarlet strawberries yet. Propagation is usually accomplished vegetatively (by rooting runners) but the seed produced and sold here is open pollinated and NOT GMO. The most famous of the varieties of scarlet strawberry is 'Little Scarlet', up until now cultivated exclusively by one grower in the UK.
